Who is E.ON?
E.ON opened its doors in 2000 in Essen, Germany, and expanded into the UK in 2002 by acquiring former British energy giant Powergen.
Since 2002, E.ON has undergone various mergers and acquisitions to evolve into the global energy giant it is today. In 2018, E.ON acquired major rival Npower, becoming the then-largest overall provider of electricity and gas in the UK.
E.ON's energy business arm caters specifically to the needs of commercial and industrial customers, offering a comprehensive suite of energy solutions designed to optimise efficiency, reduce costs, and drive sustainability.
They owned the first offshore wind farm in the UK and continue to invest in renewable energy sources, with a core focus on providing decentralised, green, and interconnected solutions that address both the environment and their customers’ needs.
What services does E.ON provide?
E.ON offers several gas and electricity plans for businesses with different requirements. These include fixed-rate plans, standard variable tariffs, multi-purchase contracts, and flex contracts.
E.ON optimises energy solutions for different industries, including retail, manufacturing, education, hospitality, and many more. The energy giant has business energy plans specifically aimed at SMEs and other plans that are more suitable for larger businesses.
E.ON’s associate company, E.ON Next, provides business quotes for SMEs. E.ON considers a business to be an SME if it uses less than 100,000 kWh of electricity or 293,000 kWh of gas per year. E.ON provides 100% renewable electricity to all of the 380,000 SME customer sites they supply.
SMEs are incentivised by E.ON to invest in energy-saving measures, with up to 40% off LED lighting, heating, and cooling products.
E.ON also offers a range of business energy solutions, such as commercial solar panels, commercial battery storage, smart meters, and electric vehicle charging products.
Npower Business Solutions, another subsidiary of the E.ON group, caters to large businesses’ energy needs. Popular plans are detailed below:
Fixed-rate contracts
Large businesses can fix the wholesale portion of their energy plans at a pre-agreed rate for up to five years.
E.ON’s Fixed: Certainty plan is their standard offering for large businesses. Providing businesses with maximum budget certainty, this contract locks customers in at a predictable agreed price for their fuel and provides them with the support of a dedicated account manager.
E.ON’s Fixed: Commodity and Fixed: Choice plan also offers fixed commodity costs while providing businesses with more choice regarding non-commodity payment options. These also come with the support of a dedicated account manager.
MultiPurchase energy contract
A fixed term, energy contract for power and gas, enabling larger businesses to split their contract into multiple purchases.
With E.ON’s MultiPurchase contracts, you can fix your energy prices at points throughout the contract term to protect against the risk of market fluctuations, while still making financial gains when wholesale prices fall.
Ultimately, this affords canny business owners who pay close attention the opportunity to purchase energy at the cheapest times to capitalise on fluctuating market prices.
Flexible energy contracts
Targeted at larger business customers, E.ON provides an array of flexible contracts to choose from. Clients are given the option to bulk buy in months, quarters, seasons or years.
Through their ‘Access Flex’ group purchasing framework, energy intensive businesses are given access to the wholesale energy market, enabling them to get cheaper rates for large quantities of energy.
By offering flexibility in pricing structures and payment terms, these contracts enable businesses to optimise their energy expenditure, mitigate financial risks, and maintain stability in their energy costs.
Additionally, flexible contracts often come with access to advanced energy management tools and services, empowering businesses to monitor and optimise their energy usage in real time, identify efficiency opportunities, and achieve their sustainability goals.
Plans available include Flex Streamline, Fast Flex for Power, and Flex Innovate. More information on these plans can be found here.
E.ON Fuel Mix
When supplying small businesses, 100% of E.ON’s fuel mix comes from renewable sources, underlining their commitment to sustainability and the UK’s net zero target by 2050.
They have invested over £3.3bn in UK renewables in the last decade alone. Alongside their own renewable assets, E.ON partner with wind farms across the UK and buy renewable energy wholesale from the market to ensure all small businesses they service are supplied with 100% renewable electricity.
However, for corporations supplied under the E.ON Energy Solutions Limited branch, their fuel mix is quite different:
Fuel | Percentage |
|---|---|
Coal | 14.8% |
Natural Gas | 74.7% |
Nuclear | 3.9% |
Renewable | 0.3% |
Other | 6.3% |
How to cancel E.ON Business Energy
As is standard across all business energy contracts, there is no cooling-off period. This means that once you’ve entered a fixed-rate deal, you are obligated to see it through to its end date.
Leaving your deal early will likely trigger an exit fee. Check the terms and conditions of your contract and contact E.ON for further information on this matter.
On or around 60 days before your fixed-rate deal is due to expire, E.ON will provide you with renewal options.
If you want to switch business energy supplier, you are required to give 30 days’ notice or more. Your supplier will then change following the end of your notice period.
We encourage business owners to shop around using our comparison tool to compare energy prices and secure the best possible deal for themselves, whether it’s from E.ON or another energy company.
